Install CSSViewer add-on in Firefox 3.5.*

2009.07.18

cssviewer_ff35

CSSViewer is a very handy add on for Firefox, which shows the css parameters of any element in a website. If you use it once then you cannot live without it.

The bad news are that it is not compatible with the Firefox 3.5.* version, and from what I can understand there are no plans for an update.

The good news are that there is a really easy way to install it and make it work perfect in Firefox 3.5.*

1. Copy the following address to another browser than Firefox (so that the pop up installation window will not come out)

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2104

if you do not have any other browser installed go to

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addons/versions/2104

2. Download the file cssviewer-1.0.3-fx.xpi

3. Use 7-zip (or any other extractor) to open it and extract it

4. Open install.rdf with notepad (I used Notepad++ to find easily the line I must change)

5. On line 18 you see <em:maxVersion>3.0.*</em:maxVersion> you must change it to <em:maxVersion>3.5.*</em:maxVersion>

6. Save the file and select all the files you extracted and make a zip file

7. Now you must rename the zip file including the zip extension to cssviewer-1.0.3-fx.xpi (it will prompt you if you are sure you want to change the file name extension and you must click yes)

8. Now drag n’ drop the xpi file to Firefox 3.5.* and the installation window will pop up. Install it normally ;)

I have checked it and it works great in Firefox 3.5.1

If you have any problem installing the add on or you like the tip please comment ;)

  1. Hi,
I’m trying to follow your tutorial but after pressing the install button, following will happen..

    ==========================================

Firefox could not install the file at

    file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/User/Desktop/cssviewer-1.0.3-fx.xpi

    because: Install script not found
    -204

    ==========================================

Any Idea how to solve this problem?

    Thanks in advance…

  2. * Problem solved *

If you receive an error “Install script not found” make sure that your zip file does not include an entire folder with the add on files. The directory structure of the zip must be like this:

you_zip_file.zip (you will rename it later to xpi)
    —– chrome [folder]
    —– chrome.manifest [file]
    —– install.js [file]
    —– install.rdf [file]

    :)

  3. Beautiful! Many thanks. In fact you can cut a few steps – I edited the rdf file without extracting, then cut straight to step 8.

  4. You are welcome mark.

By the way I tried to edit the install.rdf file directly with Notepad++ from the xpi file without extract it first with 7-zip and I get the following error: “Please check whether if this file is opened in another program”.

If you could post the tools you use it would be helpful for all of us ;)

  5. The plugin doesn’t seem to display quite properly, but it works well enough that I could see what I needed to. Thanks. Your instructions worked perfectly BTW.

  7. You simplify this into two steps by performing what you did above and simply uploading it somewhere :)

I’ve saved everyone else the trouble and have uploaded the modified .xpi file here: http://sharebee.com/085b0051

After downloading proceed to follow Step 8 :)

  8. Nice move bento.
Generally, I think it is better to give directions on how to do something than giving it directly. For instance, the procedure for making CSSViewer to work with Firefox 3.6 is exactly the same. You just change the version 3.5 to 3.6 ;)

  10. Bravo!

Thanks for this fix. It’s a great app and it would be a shame to see it disappear into the history books.
